Well, we know them fairly well, yes. Mary Jo tried it on and liked it, but then decided against it and decided on something else. As I said, nobody can sing Sweet Adeline like Ted sings itand often! And my uncle got all sorts of projects for the two of them: cutting the bridle paths over in Osterville and that kind of thing. Well, frankly, just being himself. So there has been a relationship basically in college, close, and Mary Jo bringing it very close. Ted was in the car with his mom and dad, and he and my brother got out and shoveled the streets. Cute combination name which is now past its peak. You knew all of the brothers to some extent. For instanceand Mary Jo gets involved alsowe go over to a Christmas pageant and the Christmas pageant is there, and there are youngsters on the stage who can only move their head. I think thats what everybody wants, and he had it, and he knew he had it, which is another thing. My dad went to about the sixth grade. Youd look at the situation, and you would try to do things that enhanced the situation. I can remember one time at the Varsity Club he was going to make a donation in the familys name for a charity. Where you. It makes me sad to think of all the struggles. For someone like Joan, it wasJoan was absolutely a beautiful girl. And hed have the children there. When we were out of school a year or so, he said, Ill bet you $10 that within the next five years, I will beat you in a 100-yard dash. Youre looking at many years ago, just giving a little boy a helmet and a football, how that affected his life. Do you remember when Senator Ted Kennedy first ran for the Senate in 1962 in Massachusetts? When did you come back to Massachusetts and sort of plant your roots? And a father and mother, and had two brothers: my brother Ed [Clasby]olderand my brother Jim [Clasby] in the middle. And nobody gave more pleasure to his two older brothers than he did. I would go down and spend a lot of the summer, and race with Dr. Currie. It has been my privilege to be associated with Ted, and to have a firsthand look at the situation. I would say that his heart probably was not in it. He tried to keep that spirit that all of them could share. Well, what I would do is that I would know a person who was doing a lot of work that wasnt getting any recognition. Weve had some people tell us that youre probably Senator Kennedys closest friend. Some of us hung out, and my aunt and uncle went home. I dont think he ever expressed this. And he is there, singing. He was Senator in 52.

But Im not sure how funny it actually was for Ted!

For the last few years, they have honored someone, and this last time they honored me. I think he wanted her out of the house, quite honestly. I think a lot of times, as bad as we feel for the person whos really sick, we feel almost equally bad for the people who have to watch it. And frankly, they were delighted I wasnt there, which I understood as I got a little older myself. Then of course nobody could believe Bobbythat just couldnt happen again. The only reason I can think of is that he loves the camaraderie. So did you do a lot of negotiating with police chiefs and fire chiefs and all this stuff about arrangements in terms of. That boy went on to Holy Cross. McCoy, but a separate company, of which I am president. Again, he just loves Mary Jo, and that is really the glue that has held all of this together. Ted could walk once he started taking a few steps. in the United States that we should enhance these situations and be a beacon for the world and have them want to be like us, instead of getting involved in a situation that adds fuel to interests that are not in the best interest of the United States. Id be a big help now. What would you say to those people that are out there today, and maybe somebody reading this transcript fifty to a hundred years from now? She really firmly believedand I guess shes rightthat you cant do more than that. In high school I played a lot of sports. It doesnt always get answered the way we want it to, but I think she prayed for the strength to go through it. And youre going to meet Ann Gargan King this morning. Bobby didnt have the physique that Ted had. You dont care. He always kept great contact and concern for both of his parents. And nobody gave more pleasure to his two older brothers than he did.

They sent me to a prep school in New York called Trinity-Pawling. It empties more fresh water into the ocean than the next eight largest rivers in the world. We just dedicated it. It was a feature article, and it was, I think, in October of 54. As I said, nobody can sing Sweet Adeline like Ted sings itand often! And his motherthey didnt take out loans until he got to medical school, and his mother workedI dont know what the father situation was. So we understand each other, and we dont have to see each other all the time. And I think that that has been so strong in himwell, really, in everyonebut being the youngest, because everybody looked out for Ted. I was wondering if you might talk a little bit about her and her impact on his life. OK? Her sister Ann, who, again, you will find a very interesting personThe sisters were very close because of the home situation, and with their brother Joe [Gargan], also. Our parents died when we were little, so we spent time with the different relatives, which was lovely: some had no children, and they had nine children, and we tagged on the bottom.

I would say to the mill, Its an order. Im sure there were times to which Im not privy when it was difficult. But I think I would have had a lot of trouble around here with my background, the sport background, and what I wanted to do.

Jack I think it was mainly because of his competitive spirit. Out of college, that was a lot of money. I dont know why he really came over; maybe he had an hour to kill or whatever it was. I was All-Scholastic in three sports, and was All-Scholastic in football two years, and had scholarships really to go almost anyplace. Went into the nunnery, came out of the nunnery because of a little bit of an illness. And they were pretty ready to call it. Hospital School, which is in Canton, and he would play basketball. Yes. My brother [Joseph Gargan] is a little older than Ted, and then Mary Jo. She believed that so firmly, and it got passed along. So I guess I was right. And one of these days. And I would, if I felt that he wasnt doing well, or didnt do this and that and the other thing, because I felt thats what I should do. No! Everybody who knows them, either in the family or just friends, will say that shes probably the best thing that ever could have happened in his lifetime.

What happened with Ted Kennedy and Mary Jo? I went into the lighting business, believe it or not, for a few years, and then Dave Mittelhe crosses my life a lothad worked for McCoy, where I first went to work. Its going to take you guys six years to do this? So we get down, and he has on nice, light ski boots, and he actually changes into boots that were more like slippers that you put on when you get through skiing. I didnt know anything about him; he didnt know anything about me. They would wait for a reaction, and according to the reaction, theyd.

Had you heard of the name? Not at all. At the time, I thought I should be part of it. For a lot of the programs in that era, I was a little too young. And they still got a big no.. Well, I played athletics, worked on training table, lived at what they called the Varsity Club, and I worked at the Charlestown Boys Club three nights a week unless I was playing hockey. It was more personal then, for some funny reason. As an advance man for him in SacramentoI left there, Los Angeles, the morning that he was shot. We went through the whole thing again that night. How often would you say that Senator Kennedy would talk to his father? Prayer is it. In many ways. Fairly well. We flew out. Arthur Pappas was a football player at Harvard. I was living in New Hampshire before I came back down, so this area was familiar, which made it easier for me. When one of my partners, before I owned the companyDavenport, Peters, which is the oldest wholesaler of lumber in the United States, founded in 1811my partner at the time, a fellow by the name of Dave Mittel hurt his nose.

You told us that you went to Alaska in the military after college. How did he liven things up? Just by being himself he livened things up. A couple of my uncles friends were there: a man named Carroll Rosenbloom, Morton Downey. Yes it is, very nice. I mean, was campaigning something that. Shes totally blind and he cant walk, and theyre going that distance four times a week to practice and play basketball.

Of course, they would ask various questions, and everybody was supposed to answer them. So we packed up and flew out there. And then we lost Bobby, and Ted really took over, almost as much as you can withoutHed go to everybodys schools, and he tried to get them together as a group at vacation time, skiing. But we played all sports as freshman, and on the football field as a freshman is where I met the Senator. And he was great, too, all the years his mother was sick. He would take transportation into town. Not for a minute. You have rebels, and you have peoplealmost always, great people in our country have been controversial. Yes. This took place while Jack was President. She has her own feelings. And a hundred years ago, when you got those calls from the States, you got a time it was coming through and all that kind of jazz. It wasnt the first morning; it was the second morning. I was wondering if you could tell us a little bit, perhaps, about any sort of campaign experience, either with Senator Kennedy or with the other brothers as well. out of. We had Lithuanian grandparents on my mothers side, and Irish on my fathers side.

Well, when we were about ready to leave, I gave the boy the football. He wasnt on his own, but what Im saying is it didnt have the sameAs you say, each to our own thought on it, but at the time, I. Vicki is strong. That campaign was very Hyannis Port-orchestrated. And he never left there untilagain, it was in the winter at the time, so dark would be 6:00 or 6:30.
